FAQ'S - THE LIGHTHOUSE KEEPER

Have you ever found a message in a bottle?

Why does the Lighthouse Keeper have such an open ending and why a cautionary tale?

Will there be a sequel?

Why do you draw things a bit wonky, like your lighthouses?

I can't draw straight! Well, that is only partly true. It is just how my style has developed and the quirky twists and elements I like to put into my drawings. I think the Lighthouse is probably one of my most recognisable illustrations. I like to think it is blowing in the wind!

BACK TO QUESTIONS

Have you ever found a message in a bottle?

Yes! A couple of years after I wrote the Lighthouse Keeper I found a message in a bottle washed up at Freshwater Bay. It was a magical experience.

It was from an 8 year old girl called Lulu who was on holiday across the water in Bournemouth. Her sister, Maisie, and Lulu both threw messages in bottles from Bournemouth Pier. The girls had been to the Oceanarium in Bournemouth and seen an otter. Lulu loves otters so she picked out a fluffy toy otter, in memory of her holiday, which she named Sami.  He was with her when she wrote the message. They left an email address so I could get in touch.

I love that this happened so much I sent the girls a signed copy of The Lighthouse Keeper to keep as a momento.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

Have you ever been inside a lighthouse?

Yes! I went inside the Lighthouse (Smeaton's Tower in Plymouth) that originally inspired The Lighthouse Keeper. It was part of my research as I was creating the story.

BACK TO QUESTIONS

Why does the Lighthouse Keeper have such an open ending and why a cautionary tale?

The Lighthouse Keeper was always supposed to be a little mysterious and a tiny bit creepy. It is a dark tale with some danger, so to me it always had to have a cautionary ending. I never really wanted to tell the reader exactly what happens so I left it open to interpretation. It does throw up a lot of questions doesn't it?
